Bangladesh sent first consignment of 12 metric tonnes of hilsa to India through Benapole land port on Thursday ahead of Durga Puja.
Bangladesh commerce ministry has granted permission to export Hilsa fish to India in response to a ‘special request’ from the neighbouring country due to the Durga Puja festival, said Farida Akhter, adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock on Sunday.
Bangladesh’s interim government home adviser Lt Gen, retd, Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday asked the Coast Guard to work attentively to prevent the smuggling of fertiliser, Hilsha fish and others through the river and marine routes.
Despite the ongoing prime time for catching hilsa, the national fish of Bangladesh is conspicuously absent from Khulna’s markets, leaving both buyers and sellers in a difficult situation.
