Victim’s brother suspects land conflict with in-laws family

Police on Tuesday arrested two people at Faridpur railway station on charge of killing suspended Habibullah Bahar College vice-principal Md Syfur Rahman Bhuiyan by stabbing at his rented house in the capital’s Uttarkhan area early Monday.

The arrested are a male aged 20 and a female aged 22, said Uttarkhan police station officer-in-charge Md Ziaur Rahman.

‘We have taken both of them into custody. We don’t want to disclose their names till producing before the court on Wednesday,’ Ziaur told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

According to the case, the two people entered the house about two to three days ago identifying themselves as Syfur’s wife and son.

The two fled the house after the killing of Syfur Rahman.

‘We came to know about their entry from the building caretaker and neighbours,’ the plaintiff of the case Md Lutfor Rahyman Bhuiyan, also Syfur’s younger brother said.

He said that his brother rented the flat three to four months ago for constructing a building on a plot of his in-laws.

Lutfor alleged that there was a conflict between Syfur’s father-in-law and his brother’s family over the land.

‘We primarily assumed the land conflict behind the murder,’ he said.

Syfur’s wife Sadia Rehman could not be reached over the phone for comments despite repeated attempts.

Lutfor said that his brother was involved in the politics of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the then Sheikh Hasina government suspended him for years.

‘My brother has recently received an amount over Tk 15 lakh. The money also can be a reason behind the murder,’ he assumed.

According to colleagues, although the Syfur was suspended for five years during Awami League regime, his conflict with the college acting principal Ali Borddin suspended him again one month ago.

They said that the victim had received about Tk 18 lakh recently from the college arrears.

Ali Borddin, said that the college governing body suspended Syfur about a month ago and he also got a handsome amount of money from the college recently for his five-year suspension.

He, however, denied conflict with the victim.
