
The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education under the education ministry on Monday ordered all educational institutions under it to celebrate Bengali New Year on April 14.
By a recent decision taken in an inter-ministerial meeting all educational institutions from primary to tertiary levels have been instructed to celebrate the day in festivities.
Till now, however, the primary and mass education ministry and the Directorate of Madrasha Education under the education ministry did not issue any notice regarding this.
People celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla year, across Bangladesh on April 14 each year in festivity in tune with Bengal鈥檚 centuries-old cultural heritage.
On March 23 this year, the cultural affairs ministry held the inter-ministerial meeting on peaceful celebration of Bengali New Year at the secretariat, chaired by cultural affairs adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, where decision was taken to celebrate the day in all educational institutions along with other institutions.
As per the meeting minutes, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education and Directorate of Madrasah Education under the education ministry and the primary and mass education ministry were asked to implement the decision.
Following the inter-ministerial meeting, the Secondary and Higher Education Division on the same day issued a letter to the University Grants Commission chairman and Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education director general, asking them to take initiatives for celebration of the day.
Later, on Monday, the secondary and higher education directorate issued an order addressing the head teachers of all government and non-government educational institutions under it for observing the day.
It read that following the education ministry order on March 23 all concerned were directed to celebrate the day in a festive atmosphere under their own management in all educational institutions.
