Chief adviser’s special assistant on home affairs Md Khoda Bakhsh Chowdhury talks to reporters after a meeting of the core committee on law and order at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Chief adviser’s special assistant for the home affairs ministry Khuda Baksh Chowdhury on Tuesday said that action was taken against model and Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020 winner Meghna Alam in accordance with the existing laws, and nothing illegal was done there.

He made this remark while briefing reporters after a meeting of the core committee on law and order at the home ministry’s conference room in the capital Dhaka, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported.

Home affairs adviser retired Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury was present on the occasion.

Law adviser Asif Nazrul at a press conference at his secretariat office on Sunday said that the process of the arrest of Meghna was not proper.

‘Although there are specific allegations, the process of her arrest was not proper. The process of using the Special Powers Act was not appropriate. If evidence of wrongdoing emerges, the home ministry will take proper legal action,’ he said.

‘This (Special Powers Act) law is being used. It is not that this law is not being applied, and it is not that this law has been used in this particular case. The use of this law is not illegal,’ said Khuda Baksh, also a former inspector general of police, replying to a query at the briefing on Tuesday.

‘Now, if you’re asking about this specific case - an incident has been taken place, a complaint has been filed, and the matter is under the High Court, and once a case is with the High Court, it becomes sub judice. So, further discussions on it wouldn’t be appropriate. Let’s wait to see what the outcome is,’ the BSS report quoted Khuda Boksh as saying.

Khuda Baksh said, ‘But, one thing is certain that action has been taken under the existing laws.’

Meghna was initially arrested on April 9 by the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. The next day, a magistrate court, acting on a police recommendation, imposed a 30-day detention on her under the Special Powers Act, 1974.
