Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said that propaganda was being run on social media targeting the BNP over reforms and elections to mislead the country's people.

‘A campaign is being run on social media mentioning that the BNP wants elections before reforms or does not want reforms at all. It creates confusion among the people,’ he said while talking to journalists at his home in Thakurgaon’s Kalibari area.

Noting that the BNP has never advocated for elections before reforms, he said that the party had always emphasised that the minimum reforms necessary for a fair and acceptable election should be carried out first.

‘These reforms include election system reforms, law enforcement reforms, and judicial reforms,’ he said.

He said that reforms in these three areas were crucial for the country.

Stating about BNP’s 31-point state reform proposals, Fakhrul said that it clearly outlined the party’s stance on constitutional reforms.

He said that the BNP did not intend to interfere with issues that had already been settled.

In response to a question about potential political conflicts due to differences in opinion, Fakhrul said, ‘The beauty of democracy lies in differing opinions. Different political parties will present their views to the people, and through elections, the people will choose the right option.’

When asked whether the BNP will turn authoritarian if it comes to power, he said, ‘During the BNP’s tenure, there was no rise of fascism… If we turn authoritarian, we will face the consequences the Awami League is facing.’

Regarding the involvement of some party leaders and activists in crimes, he said that the BNP had taken action against certain members involved in criminal activities, including dissolving some organisational committees and expelling certain leaders from the party.
