A section of secondary-level non-government school teachers on Thursday urged the authorities to pay them house rents and festival allowances as per the government rules.

They also said that without these facilities the disparity between the government and non-government teachers would not be eliminated.

Under the banner of Bangladesh Secondary Level Non-Government Teachers’ Association, they submitted a memorandum with these demands to the offices of the education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury and the ministry secretary Suleman Khan.

A press release issued by the association also read that their demands are – house rent as per the government rules, the medical allowance, full festival bonuses, provisions for transfer of the teachers, appointment of the head teachers and assistant head teachers by forming a national appointment commission and inclusion of the teachers under the Monthly Payment Order system in the pension scheme.

Before submission of the memorandum, the association held a rally in front of the National Press Club in the presence of president Jahangir Hossain and vice-president Mohammad Yeasin.

At the rally, the association leaders said that without implementation of these demands the existing salary disparity between government and non-government teachers would not be reduced.

The salaries and other allowances for the non-government teachers were very low which affect their professional life, they continued.

Without provisions for transfer, the teachers cannot stay with their families, they further said.

They alleged that currently capable people were not appointed as head teachers and assistant head teachers as they were now appointed by bribing people on managing committees of the educational institutions.

If the non-government teachers are also brought under the pension scheme then they could teach with more concentration, they added.
