
At least eight people, including a UP member, were killed and 11 others injured in separate road accidents in Tangail, Jamalpur and Gaibandha on Friday.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that at least four people were killed and 10 others injured when a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck at Kalihati link road on Dhaka-Tangail highway early Friday.
Among the deceased, two have been identified as Mizanur Rahman, 33, son of Bahar Uddin of Ghagra village of Dhanbari upazila of Tangail and Ziaul, 35, son of late A Wazed of Mahish Bayan village of Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur.
The identities of the other two victims could not be known immediately.
The accident occurred in the area when a Mymensingh-bound bus collided with a truck that left Kalihati at about 1:00am, leaving four people dead on the spot and 10 others injured, said Md Nannu Khan, in-charge of Alenga highway police.
The injured were admitted to Tangail general hospital. Police seized the bus and truck from the spot. Legal action would be taken in this connection, he added.
In Jamalpur, three persons were killed and another was injured in a road accident on the Jamalpur-Tangail road in Sadar upazila Friday morning, said another BSS report.
The victims are Khokan Mahmud, 45, of Kapas Hatia village, Abdul Malek, 53, of Sheikh Sadi village in Melandah upazila and Md Mostafizur Rahman, 55, of Megha Nayapara village in Jamalpur Sadar upazila.
Police said that the accident took place at about 6.30am when a truck hit a battery-run easy-bike in Belita area of the upazila, leaving easy-bike driver Khokan dead on the spot and its three passengers injured.
The injured were sent to a local hospital where two died to their injuries, said Faysal M Atiqik, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station.
In Gaibandha, a union parishad member was reportedly killed in a road accident in the Dariapur Bazar area under Sadar upazila early Friday, another BSS report read.
The deceased is Mostaq Ahmed, 45, son of late Sirajul Haque at Analertari village of the upazila.
Local sources said that being a pillion rider, Mostaq was returning home from Kabiler Bazar on a motorcycle with another person. When the motorcycle reached Dariapur Bazar area at about 2:00am, Mostaq fell into a roadside ditch from the motorcycle, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he was rescued and taken to Sadar hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Masum Hakkani, chairman of the union parishad, however, said that many speculations had been created centring on the death as his family members alleged that he had been killed in a planned way.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar thana Masud Rana said that after getting a post-mortem report, the reason behind the killing would be known.
