A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Friday allowed the police to take former primary and mass education affairs state minister Zakir Hossain, home ministry’s former senior secretary Mustafa Kamal Uddin and Election Commission’s former secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed for different terms in custody for interrogation in three murder cases.

The police, on the other hand, on the day arrested the Dhaka University unit sports secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League,  Zahidul Haque Shuvo, at a location in Brahmanbaria.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter granted the police to take ex-state minister Zakir Hossain to take in custody for three days for interrogation in a case filed with Mohammadpur police station in Dhaka over the killing of electrician Shamim Hawlader.

The police produced him before the court seeking a five-day remand in custody on the day, a day after the Detective Branch of police had arrested Zakir, also a former Awami League lawmaker for Kurigram-4 constituency, at the capital’s Mohammadpur.

According to the case, Shamim Hawlader was shot in the capital’s Mohammadpur Beribadh area on July 20 during the anti-discrimination student movement. Later, he was rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The same court allowed the police to take former senior secretary Mustafa Kamal Uddin in custody for three days for interrogation in a case filed with the Paltan police station over the murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim.

The police produced him before the court seeking a 10-day remand in custody on Friday, a day after detectives arrested him at Lalkhan in Chattogram.

According to the case, the BNP called a grand rally in Dhaka on October 28, 2023. To foil the programme, Awami League too called its own grand rally in the capital. At one stage, AL activists, with the help of police, attacked the BNP rally at Naya Paltan, killing Shamim on the spot.

The case was filed with the capital’s Paltan Police Station on September 24, about one and a half months after the fall of the AL regime amid student-led mass uprising on August 5.

The same court also allowed the police to take former EC secretary Helal in custody for four days for interrogation in the case of the killing of BNP activist Mokbul Hossain.

The police produced him before the court seeking a 10-day remand in custody for interrogation in the case on Friday, two days after he was arrested at Khulshi in Chattogram.

According to the case statement, BNP activist Makbul was killed in police firing when the law enforcers raided BNP’s Nayapaltan central office and attacked thousands of the party people beside the office on December 7, 2022.

On September 30 this year, a case was filed with Paltan police station against 256 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over the incident.

Helal served as the Election Commission secretary during the controversial 11th Jatiya Sangsad election in the country in 2018.

On the other hand, police arrested DU unit BCL sports secretary Zahidul Haque Shuvo at Talshohar purba union under Sadar upazila in Brahmanbaria.

Mozaffar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station, said that the BCL leader was accused in two cases – one filed under the Explosives Substances Act with Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station and the other was filed with Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka.
