
A programme of the Sunamganj district chapter of the Student Movement Against Discrimination was foiled on Thursday as supporters of two factions of the platform clashed, leaving at least eight of the both groups injured.
Local people said that a meeting of the newly formed 99-member committee of the organisation鈥檚 district chapter was scheduled to be held at noon at Hasan Raja Auditorium of the district Shilpakala Academy.
They said that students from different upazilas of the district started to gather on the premises of the academy since morning on the day to attend the programme.
A faction of the students, who failed to get positions on the committee, locked in an altercation with the committee members at about 11:30am over formation of the committee that triggered a clash, leaving at least eight students of both sides injured, the locals said.
The supporters of the rival factions, however, took position in front of the academy resulting in a tense situation.
At one stage, the Sunamganj Sadar upazila nirbahi officer reached the spot and tried to calm the situation, witnesses said.聽
They informed that the injured students were given treatment at different private clinics in the district town.
Sunamganj Sadar police station officer-in-charge Nazmul Haque confirmed the incident to 抖阴精品.
He said that on information, a team of the army along with police rushed to the spot immediately and brought the situation under control.
The sadar upazila nirbahi officer Atish Darshi Chakma told 抖阴精品 in the evening that he discussed the issue with leaders of the rival groups in the presence of the army and police.
