Rail communications between Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh were disrupted for about two hours on Tuesday, as temporary workers of the Bangladesh Railway demanding arrears and permanent jobs blocked the rail track in the morning in Tejgaon area in the capital Dhaka.

Passengers on different routes suffered as they were remained stranded inside different trains across the country during the protest.


Under the banner of Bangladesh Railway Temporary Workers, the workers blocked the rail track and demanded arrears for five months and permanent jobs under the railway.

The protesting workers alleged that as they failed to get any results despite several meetings with the railways authorities, they blocked the track.

The number of these temporary workers is nearly 6,000 who are mainly gatekeepers, points-men and way men, according to the railway.

Anowar Hossain, Dhaka railway station master, said that the protesters blocked the rail track at about 10:45am.

Sajedul Islam, Kamalapur station manager, said that the rail communications resumed about 12:45pm when the workers removed their blockade from the track.

Dhaka divisional railway manager Mohiuddin Arif said that the workers left the place after they were assured that their arrears would be paid within one to two days.
