Recommended primary school teachers, whose appointments were cancelled through a High Court order on February 6, on Tuesday threatened the government with tougher programmes if their appointments are not confirmed by today noon.

The announcement came from a sit-in programme held by the protesting recommended primary school teachers in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh in the capital Dhaka after a delegation of six protesters went to the secretariat at 2:00pm on Tuesday and met Abu Taher Md Masud Rana, secretary of the primary and mass education ministry.

After meeting the secretary, one of the protesters Jannatul Naim told reporters that the secretary assured them of their appointments.

‘However, we will continue our movement until our demand is met,’ she said.

The protesters gathered in Shahbagh area at about 11:00am on Tuesday.

Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Khalid Mansoor said that the appointment seekers demonstrated in front of the National Museum in the morning.

‘There was no chaos or irregularities in the traffic movement as they did not take position on road,’ he added.

Earlier on Monday, the protesters had blocked the Shahbagh intersection, demanding the appointment of 6,531 candidates in the third phase of recruitment for assistant teachers in government primary schools in Dhaka and Chattogram divisions.

During the blockade, police charged batons, and fired sound grenades and teargas shells and sprayed water through canons on the protesters to disperse them from the road.

Several people were injured while police detained many protesters who were later released.

According to the demonstrators, the recruitment notice for assistant teachers was issued in three phases. The third phase has faced delays and complications while the final recruitment process for the first and second phases has been completed.

The High Court on February 6 declared illegal and scrapped the November 20, 2024 appointment of 6,531 assistant teachers in government primary schools in Dhaka and Chattogram based on job quotas as per the 2019 recruitment rules.

A bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi delivered the verdict while disposing of a writ petition filed by 30 job seekers in November 2024 challenging the legality of the recruitment process.

The 2019 recruitment rules allow 60 per cent quota for women, 20 per cent for wards and 20 per cent for males in recruiting teachers for government primary schools.
