International Crimes Tribunal chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam on Sunday alleged that investigators uncovered three secret Aynaghar torture cells hidden within Joint Force Investigation Cell, where underground chambers had been sealed off behind walls.

The investigators found heaps of garbage and crucial evidence of crimes in those chambers where timed explosive devices were planted to kill the investigators, he alleged.

The ICT chief prosecutor disclosed the information at his regular briefing at the ICT premises in the capital.

‘I was present with the investigations at the Aynaghar at TFI Cell,’ Tajul said, adding, ‘We went there to investigate enforced disappearance cases.’

‘We were unaware of the danger when we went there, and found time bombs planted there—clearly intended to kill the investigators,’ he told reporters.

Though the exact locations of the sites remain classified, Tajul said that full details would be disclosed in due time.

‘You will know everything once we file formal charges with the tribunal, possibly in a day or two,’ he said.

He accused suspects involved in the July–August uprising of orchestrating efforts to sabotage the investigation and discredit the tribunal.

‘They are spreading misinformation to create confusion and undermine the prosecution,’ he said.

Tajul confirmed that several conspirators had already been arrested, and investigations into others were underway.

‘We’ve identified many of them,’ he said.

He said that the prosecution, tribunal, and investigators were united to ensure justice for the crimes linked to the uprising.
