A Chattogram court on Sunday asked the police to officially show listed crime suspect Sajjad Hossain, also known as Chhoto Sajjad, arrested in a double murder case involving a car chase in the city.
The court passed the order after hearing a petition filed by police in this regard.
The court also granted four-day remand for two of Sajjad’s alleged accomplices Md Belal and Manik, who were arrested in the same case.
Another Chattogram court, meanwhile, on the day granted five-day remand for Chhoto Sajjad in connection with the murder of a youth named Tahsin in the city’s Chandgaon area.
The orders were issued by additional chief metropolitan magistrate Sarker Hasan Shahriar and the sixth metropolitan magistrate SM Alauddin Mahmud, said Chattogram Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Mofiz Uddin.
He said that police sought seven-day remand for the two accused in the Bakalia car chase double murder case. Following a hearing, the court granted four-day remand each.
On the same day, police sought 10-day remand for Sajjad in the Tahsin murder case in the Chandgaon police station area in the city.
After the hearing, the court granted five-day remand for Sajjad.
According to the case statement, on the night of March 29, a group of armed assailants on multiple motorcycles opened fire on a private car in Chattogram’s Rajakhali area under Bakalia police station. The vehicle entered Bakalia Access Road and stopped near Chandanpura in the Chawk Bazar police station area, where the attackers fired indiscriminately. Two people were killed and two others injured in the incident.
Police suspected the attack was targeted. Sajjad’s associates reportedly aimed to assassinate Sarwar, who was sitting in the front of the targeted car but narrowly escaped.
Police later conducted an operation on April 3 and arrested Belal and Manik in connection with the incident.
It is alleged that there had been a long-standing dispute between Sajjad and Sarwar Hossain Babla over establishing dominance in the city, with multiple killings linked to their rivalry over the years.
On March 15, police arrested Chhoto Sajjad from Dhaka’s Bashundhara City Shopping Complex.
His arrest reportedly reignited tensions between the two rival groups.
