The provost of Maulana Bhashani Hall at Jahangirnagar University has resigned amid ongoing protests by students over alleged administrative failure to maintain hygiene and standard food in the hall canteen.
In an official notice released by the university’s registrar office on Thursday, it was confirmed that professor Aminur Rahman Khan had stepped down from his position citing personal reasons, expressing his inability to continue with his position.
The notice also announced that professor Md Kamruzzaman, a faculty member from the zoology department, has been appointed as the new provost.
Professor Kamruzzaman will oversee the hall’s operations on a full-time basis until further notice, the notice said.
The students had previously raised several complaints against Aminur Rahman Khan’s administration including negligence in overseeing the work of hall staff, failure to address the hall’s poor living conditions, lack of action in improving the reading room, reluctance to refurbish students’ rooms, and making no efforts to control the quality of food in the dining hall.
In response to these grievances, the students had been demanding the provost’s resignation, putting lock on his office for the last four days.
