The inspector general of police, Baharul Alam, on Monday said that the police would not arrest or harass anyone in any case if his or her involvement was not found in the investigation.
He made the comment at a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on the occasion of the Police Week, set to begin today.
‘I have directed all levels of police members not to arrest or harass any innocent people. People who would be found liable in the investigation will be arrested,’ the IGP said while responding to a question over harassing innocent people named in different cases lodged after the August 5, 2024 political changeover.
The IGP said that these cases were not false but the police could not stop the plaintiffs from putting names of the increased number of accused persons than the actual number of offenders in the cases as there was a limitation in the law.
‘After August 5, 2024, we have observed that five to 10 people were responsible for committing an offence but 300 people were made accused in the case in a bid to take money illegally from the accused persons and harass and intimidate them,’ said Baharul.
‘I have spoken to different police stations many times over the issue. I requested the people to inform higher officials in case of facing harassment in such cases,’ he said.
Responding to another question about the number of police members involved in killings and commanding fellows to go for action against people during the mass uprising, Baharul said that they would be able to inform the number only after completing all the investigations.
Asked about the recent interview of the DMP commissioner, published in a newspaper, where he had claimed that there was no extremist in the country and the previous regime had staged the extremist drama, the IGP said that none could ensure that there was no extremist in the country.
Chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam, deputy press secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, police headquarters’ assistant inspector general of police for media and public relations Enamul Haque Sagar and PHQ public relations officer AKM Kamrul Ahsan were also present.
