The High Commissioner of Pakistan to Bangladesh, Syed Ahmed Maroof, on Monday called on Bangladesh foreign secretary Md Jashim Uddin at his Segun Bagicha office in the capital Dhaka and briefed him about regional issues amid escalating tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi.

‘The High Commissioner of Pakistan briefed the foreign secretary about regional issues,’ said a foreign affairs ministry press release issued on the day.

The Pakistani envoy also apprised the foreign secretary of the ongoing visit of a high-level business delegation from Pakistan to Bangladesh focusing on specific products and the Bangladesh-Pakistan Business Forum which is being held in Dhaka.

During the meeting, both the sides expressed satisfaction with the constructive discussion and the successful conclusion of the sixth round of foreign secretary-level bilateral consultations between Bangladesh and Pakistan on April 17 in Dhaka, highlighting it as a positive step towards strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The importance of continued follow-up and further work by the relevant authorities from both the sides in the areas and issues discussed in the foreign secretary-level bilateral consultations has been emphasised, according to the release.

Both the sides expressed hope that the visit by Pakistan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister to Bangladesh would take place at a mutually convenient time.

On April 24, Pakistan postponed its deputy prime minister and foreign minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar’s visit to Bangladesh scheduled for April 27–28 amid the ongoing crisis between the two arch-rivals over the deadly attack in India-administered Kashmir that killed 26 tourists at Pahalgam on April 22.

India and Pakistan exchanged an escalating series of tit-for-tat diplomatic measures on April 24 after New Delhi blamed Islamabad for backing the shooting attack in India-administered Kashmir.

Troops from Pakistan and India exchanged fire in disputed Kashmir for a fourth night in a row, India’s army said on Monday, as relations between the nuclear-armed rivals plunged to their lowest level in years.
