An imam of a mosque in Gazipur鈥檚 Pubail area died in jail custody early Monday, hours after he was beaten by an angry mob on Sunday allegedly for raping several boys.

The deceased, Rahij Uddin, 35, of Chandpur, is the imam and khatib of Hyderabad Akhladul Jame Mosque in Pubail. He is also a leader of the Gazipur city unit of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Sena, the student wing of the Bangladesh Islami Front.


Pubail Police Station officer-in-charge SM Amirul Islam said that local residents detained Rahij Sunday morning allegedly for raping several boys, tied him to a tree, and beat him mercilessly.

He said that they rescued Rahij, produced him before a court in Gazipur and the court sent him to jail.聽

Gazipur District Jail superintendent Md Rafiqul Kader said that Rahij was sick when he was brought to the jail and he was admitted to the jail hospital.

He said that Rahij鈥檚 condition deteriorated at about 2:45am on Monday and the jail authorities rushed him to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
