Unidentified attackers on Tuesday afternoon vandalised several buses, including a Dhaka University bus, in the Uttara’s Azampur area of the capital.
Uttara West police officer-in-charge Mohammad Hafizur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the incident occurred at about 1:30pm when 300–400 students were protesting at the death of a Secondary School Certificate examinee in a road accident on April 27.
The protesters then attacked and vandalised the buses on the nearby road.
Filing a case over the attack on buses was underway, said the police officer, adding that the attack left several people injured.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Dhaka University correspondent reported that six students of the university were injured in the attack on the Khonika bus running on the Tongi-Gazipur route.
‘Six injured students were taken to hospital and most were released after treatment. One student remains in serious condition,’ DU proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said.
The attack seemingly was not targeted specifically at the university bus, he said, adding that some of the students already filed a general diary with the police over the incident.
‘The students were protesting and attacked several buses. Our bus happened to be among them,’ he said.
Meanwhile, the DU units of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad protested at the attack, demanding punishment of those involved.
A group of DU students also staged a demonstration in front of VC Chattar in the university area protesting at the attack.
Earlier on April 27, SSC examinee Nayeem, 17, was hit by a truck while he was crossing road after taking an exam that day, said Shamim Ahmed, officer-in-charge of the Uttara East police.
Nayeem was first taken to a nearby branch of Popular Hospital and from there to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he succumbed.
OC Shamim said that no case was filed over the incident yet as of Tuesday evening.
