The first solo painting exhibition of young artist Amitab Sarker titled Im/material is under way at Kala Kendra at Lalmatia in the capital.

The artist has depicted his artistic journey from Khulna to Kolkata, landscapes, nature and texture of clay made walls which came from roots.

His canvas is dominated by abstract mapping of nature. A total of 43 artworks are being displayed at the exhibition. Most of the works are acrylic on canvas, while some paintings are also done on paper. The exhibition is curated by Sharmillie Rahman.

With the yellow-green, black and blue acrylic colours, the clay also contributes to his canvas which attempts to portray poetry of nature and its diversity.

‘In my first solo exhibition I have tried to portray my journey as an artist. I grew near the Sundarbans where nature comes with non-ending green, its diverse layers and density. When I travelled India as part of my higher study I observed landscapes from the top of the hill which are reflected in my canvases with minimal forms and textures,’ said Amitab Sarker.

‘With clay I try to reflect the feelings of mud-based walls, the texture can convey feelings of our old traditional houses which were undivided memories of Bengal. I experimented with clay on canvas which not only creates texture but also a feeling of mud-based wall. Through my artworks I invite audiences to recall their unseen and invisible memories,’ Amitab said.

The exhibition inaugurated on August 30 will end on Tuesday.
