Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said on Saturday that along with abolishing the fascist system, a new political settlement was a must to transform Bangladesh into a democratic state.

‘We need a new political settlement on the basis of a democratic constitution. For that, state institutions and laws must be reformed.

The election system should be organised in such a way that no one can take away voting rights of people in the country,’ Saki said while addressing a public dialogue in the Rajshahi city.

Zonayed Saki said that the ousted Awami League-led autocratic government organised the entire state to oppress and intimidate the opposition and kill people in the name of crossfire.

‘The AL has destroyed every institution in the country by allowing officials to do corruption. All of them must be brought to book,’ he added.

Mentioning that the constitution adopted in 1972 did not reflect the aspirations of the people of 1971, Saki said that the main problem behind failures of the previous mass movements and revolutions lay in the constitution’s power structures.

‘In our existing constitution, the prime minister can put the whole state in his/her pocket.

We want to make it clear that we do not want this constitution which turns a ruler into a dictator,’ he said.

Urging to build a new political power in Bangladesh, Saki said, ‘The student-led mass uprising demands that a new political force be formed in Bangladesh. So, we have to build the political power of the people before the next general election,’ he added.

Among others, Ganosamhati Andolan presidium member Zulhasnain Babu, Rajshahi district unit member secretary Jewel Rana, Rastra Sanskar Andolan Rajshahi divisional coordinator freedom fighter Mahmud Jaman Quaderi, Nodi Bachao Andolan Rajshahi district unit president Enamul Haque spoke at the dialogue  with Ganosamhati Andolan Rajshahi district unit convener Murad Morshed in the chair.
