Gono Odhikar Parishad senior vice-president Faruk Hasan was stabbed allegedly by activists of newly formed political party National Revolutionary Council after addressing a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital Dhaka Saturday afternoon.
The attack was carried out at about 4:00pm after Faruk delivered his speech criticising the interim government as a guest at the meeting organised by the聽 National Revolutionary Council.
鈥楩aruk Hasan was admitted to the BSSMU [Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University] with critical condition. Faruk was stabbed and beaten by National Revolutionary Council activists. National Revolutionary Council joint convener Zakir Majumdar said that the attack was carried out when he was leaving the rally during a break of the programme for Asr prayers after his speech.
鈥榃e don鈥檛 know who had launched the attack. Our five people were injured while trying to save Faruk,鈥� he added.
Rashed said that they went to the Shahbagh police station and spoke to the officer-in-charge over filing a case.
鈥楾he attack was carried out for speaking about the government鈥檚 failure to ensure treatment of mass uprising victims,鈥� he added.
Denying the allegations, National Revolutionary Council assistant member secretary Galib Ekhsan said that outsiders attacked Faruk Hasan suddenly.
鈥楴either our party nor our activists were involved in the attack,鈥� Galib added.
The programme was organised with the call of eliminating the fascist system from the country, establishing new political settlement and public interests and reforming the state structure.
Among others, family members of July uprising martyrs were invited in the programme.
Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Mohammad Khalid Mansur said that he knew about the incident.
