Leaders of the Ganosamhati Andolan on Friday demanded that the Dhaka city corporation authorities cancel the registration and some other fees of burial and cremation.
Ganosamhati central and Dhaka city south unit leaders said that low income residents suffered for the burial and cremation fees and the authorities concerned must cancel the fees to make the city corporations people-friendly.
They raised the demand at a human chain, organised by the Dhaka city south unit of the Ganosamhati Andolan, held in front of the Azimpur Graveyard.
Addressing the event as the chief guest, Ganosamhati political council member Monir Uddin Pappu said that people had to pay Tk 1,000 as registration fees along with an additional charge of Tk 860 for burial.
Families also have to bear extra costs, amounting to nearly Tk 3,000 for burial essentials like mats, bamboo, and grave digging, said Pappu.
He stated that the fees for low income residents were unjust and oppressive as every city resident had to pay various taxes, which should be used for public services.
Ganosamhati鈥檚 Dhaka city south unit member secretary Selimuzzaman warned the authorities to cancel the fees, otherwise, they would intensify their movement, and even announce a programme of besieging the Nagar Bhaban.
Besides, Ganosamhati鈥檚 Lalbagh thana unit convener Ismail Hossain Tito, member secretary Bahauddin, organiser Saifuddin Ahmed, its Bangshal thana unit convener Joy Bhowmik and member secretary Ahmad Ullah Sumit, among others, spoke at the human chain.
There are three graveyards and two crematories under the Dhaka South City Corporation while there are six graveyards and one crematory under the Dhaka North City Corporation.
