
Leaders of different political parties on Wednesday at separate protest programmes in Dhaka said that imposing value added tax and supplementary duties on more than 100 commodities would increase sufferings of the common people to run their families.
They called on the interim government headed by professor Muhammad Yunus to refrain from imposing fresh VAT and reintroduce truck sell of essential commodities for the common people in Dhaka city.
Left Democratic Alliance, a combine of six left political parties, and theJatiyaSamajtantrik Dal-JSD organised separate rallies in front of the National Press Club to press their demands.
The coordinator of LDA and also coordinator of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) MasudRana, who chaired the rally, called on the interim government to refrain from imposing VAT and SD on more than 100 commodities and reintroduce 43 thousand Trading Corporation of Bangladesh cards for the common people by which they would get essential commodities.
Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary RuhinHossain Prince said that interim government had failed to reduce price hikes of essential commodities in five months.
Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz said that the interim government should hold the next general election as early as possible for democratic transition of the country.
Democratic Revolutionary Party general secretary MushrefaMishu said that people would not accept rule of the interim government for a long time.
The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
Tania Rob,senior vice-president of theJatiyaSamajtantrik Dal-JSD, a partner of theGanatantra Mancha, also called on the interim government to refrain from imposing fresh VAT and SD on more than 100 commodities.
It will increase prices of essential commodities and increase sufferings of the common people, Tania Rob said.
Chaired by Dhaka city leader MainurRahman, the rally was addressed, among others, by central leader KM Jabir, MosharrafHossain, Kamal UddinMajumder, MosharefHossain Montu and others.
The rally was followed by a protest procession.
