National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam on Tuesday urged all political parties and professionals to remain united against the fascist force, saying that fascism could not be fully eradicated without a national unity.
Student leaders of the July-August mass uprising that toppled the authoritarian Awami League regime in August 2024 announced the new political party, National Citizen Party, on February 28.
At an iftar mahfil in honour of the political parties, civil society and business community, organised by the NCP at the Intercontinental Hotel in the capital Dhaka, Nahid warned that the risk of Bangladesh was not over yet as the fascist force was still conspiring against it from home and abroad.
He said that the disunity between the politicians and the forces of the uprising could provide an opportunity to the military and civil bureaucracy, the mafia, the looting class and the conspiring forces to satisfy their interests.
He said that there might be ideological debate among the political parties, but all should remain united and continue dialogue for democracy.
‘We want to lay the constitutional, economic, political and cultural foundations of the country through fundamental and qualitative changes in the governance structure,’ said the newly formed political party chief.
For the qualitative changes in the governance structure, the NCP announced its vision to establish a new republic through a new constitution, Nahid said.
He iterated that it was possible to hold both the constituent assembly and parliamentary elections simultaneously within the timeframe announced by the interim government.
‘But the law and order situation must be improved before the elections,’ Nahid said.
The government would have to ensure institutional neutrality as the military, police, bureaucracy and media must be neutral for holding an election, he said.
He demanded a speedy trial for the July mass killing and said that the political fate of Awami League would be settled through ensuring justice through the trial.
