
At least 20 people were injured as two factions of the ruling Awami League clashed over occupying a CNG stand at Sujanagar upazila in Pabna on Saturday.
The incident took place in the Kadua area under ​​Satbaria union of the upazila on Saturday at about 9:00am.
Of the injured, 13 people of the two groups were admitted to Pabna General Hospital and Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex.
They are Taju Pramanik, 45, Alauddin Pramanik, 50, Helena Khatun, 40, Ashiqur Rahman Shubo, 21, Masum Sheikh, 34, Shariful Islam, 30, Saddam Hussain, 30, Delwar Hossain, 35, Salim Pramanik, 35, Easin Pramanik, 40, Suman Pramanik, 38, Monir Uddin Pramanik, 63, and Ujjal Kazi, 40.
According to police, locals and the injured, the Kadua CNG stand was occupied by the people of Sujanagar upazila Awami League general secretary and the defeated candidate in the upazila polls, Shahinuzzaman Shahin.
Sujanagar upazila Awami League president Abdul Wahab, however, recently won the upazila elections.
Since then, there has been tension between the two groups over possession of the Kadua CNG stand, they said.
Upazila chairman Abdul Wahab said that it was not a political issue, but a local one.
‘Shahinuzzaman Shahin is responsible for any untoward incident at Sujanagar,’ he added.
Upazila Awami League general secretary and defeated chairman candidate Shahinuzzaman Shahin said, ‘Since the elections, my people are being attacked and beaten continuously. On Friday, one of my men was hacked and seriously injured by his men at Manikhat.’
Officer-in-charge of Sujanagar police station Jalal Uddin said that a clash took place between Shahin group and Wahab group.
‘We have not yet received any written complaint. Legal action will be taken after receiving complaints,’ the OC added.
