An elderly Bangladeshi expatriate, who was occasionally visiting home, and a youth were stabbed to death by unknown people in separate incidents in Hazaribagh police station area in the capital on Friday.
The deceased are AKM Abdur Rashid, 85, a doctor living in the United Kingdom with his wife, and Mohammad Shanto, 20, a resident of Hazaribagh in Dhaka.
Hazaribagh police station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam said that Abdur Rashid died upon his arrival at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at about 4:00am while Shanto died while undergoing treatment at the hospital at about 11:00am on Friday.
The process of filling cases regarding the incidents was under way, added the OC.
Quoting Rashid’s wife Sufiya Rashid, OC Saiful said, ‘The incident occurred at house no 294/1 in the Dhanmondi area at about 2:00am on Friday after a group of people entered Bangladeshi expatriate Abdur Rashid’s house. At one point, they stabbed him as he was trying to stop them while they were trying to snatch chain from
his wife’s neck.’
Nothing in the house was robbed, the OC said, adding that police were looking into the matter to find out if it was a robbery attack or Abdur Rashid was killed for other reasons.
Saidur Rahman, a tenant of the building who brought the victim to the hospital, said that both Abdur Rashid and his wife Sufiya Rashid were doctors living in the UK.
‘They come to visit Bangladesh in September and leave by December every year,’ he said.
Neighbours found Abdur Rashid lying on the floor severely injured while his wife was trying to wake him up, Saidur said.
He said that Abdur Rashid was first taken to a nearby hospital and later was taken to the DMCH, where the doctor on duty declared him dead upon arrival.
A youth named Shanto, meanwhile, died while undergoing treatment at the DMCH on Friday morning after he was stabbed by a suspected thief in the Park Gali area of Hazaribagh in the capital at around 10:00pm on Thursday.
Deceased’s father Mohammad Zafar, who brought him to the hospital, said that his son Shanto was trying to catch a suspected thief for lifting a bicycle in the area on Thursday night.
‘The thief stabbed my son in the chest and back with a sharp weapon on Thursday night,’ he said, adding that he took Shanto to the hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment the next day.
DMCH police outpost in-charge Md Faruk said that the bodies were kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy.
