The interim government has taken initiatives to withdraw all fictitious and freedom of speech-related cases,  filed during the past 15 years of the Awami League regime, by February.

Law adviser Asif Nazrul came up with the information while briefing journalists at the law ministry office at the secretariat on Tuesday.

He said that the interim government had already identified more than 2,500 fictitious and politically motivated cases filed in 25 districts against several lakh people.

The process of withdrawing 2,500 cases from the 25 districts is underway and is expected to conclude within a week, he said.

‘We hope that we will be able to withdraw all the fictitious cases by February,’ said Asif Nazrul.

The law adviser said that around 4,000 to 4,500 public prosecutors appointed by the past government fled after August 5.

‘As a result, we cannot withdraw the cases in the absence of public prosecutors, as the government or the law ministry has to work through the public prosecutors,’ he said.

Immediately after the appointment of public prosecutors, the government has started to identify and make a list of fictitious cases, he said.

Asif Nazrul said, ‘A total of 322 speech offence cases filed under cyber laws during the previous government are under trial.’

Out of the 322 cases, 113 cases have already been withdrawn through applications submitted by the public prosecutors, he said.

‘We hope that all the speech offence cases will be withdrawn within two weeks,’ he added.

He also said that the government was further discussing the recently approved Cyber Security Ordinance 2024, for its finalisation.

The law adviser also informed the journalists that a gazette was issued regarding the Supreme Court Judges Appointment Ordinance 2025 on the day.

Initiatives have also been taken to launch a separate judicial secretariat of the Supreme Court and a permanent attorney service, he added.

He also said that there were some complaints that since public prosecutors were appointed by partisan governments, they could play a neutral role at times.

Instead of playing a role for the state, they play a role for the ruling party. So, a work has been started to draft a law for a neutral attorney service, and it can be done within a month, Asif said.

He also said that the government started providing online services regarding 36 types of documents from the law ministry aiming to mitigate public suffering.

Asif Nazrul said that a decision had also been taken to cancel marriage tax.

‘We hope to carry out all necessary legal reforms within the next six months, and our goal is to complete all expected reforms,’ he added.
