
A Dhaka court on Monday placed three people on a seven-day remand each in connection with a case filed on charges of killing Primeasia University student Jahidul Islam Parvez in the capital’s Banani area on Saturday.
Jahidul was an activist of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
The JCD staged countrywide demonstrations on Monday, protesting at the murder of Jahidul and demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers.
The arrestees are Al Kamal Sheikh, Alvi Hasan Zunayed, and Al Amin Dani, all aged 19 to 20 years.
Dhaka’s additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Sanaullah issued the order after they were produced before the court with a 10-day remand plea.
Banani police station officer-in-charge Md Rasel Sarwar said that a team of Banani police arrested them from Mohakhali Wireless Gate area early Monday.
‘They were not named in the first information report, but the preliminary investigation suggested they were involved in the murder. CCTV footage also confirmed their presence in the crime scene,’ added the police official.
On April 19, Jahidul, a student of the university’s textile department, was stabbed to death during a clash with a group of fellow students and outsiders on its campus.
The victim’s cousin, Humayun Kabir, filed a case with the Banani police station early Sunday, accusing 38 people, including two leaders of the Students Against Discrimination for their alleged involvement in the murder early Sunday.
According to the case statement, an altercation broke out between Jahidul and three students of the same university over allegations of harassing two female students of the University of Scholars at about 4:30pm on April 19.
The university authorities intervened in an attempt to mediate the situation.
However, after leaving the campus, a group of university students and outsiders allegedly attacked and stabbed Jahidul. He was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Pabna reported that at least three students were injured in a clash between leaders and activists of the JCD and the Students Against Discrimination in the district.
JCD president Rakibul Islam Rakib earlier alleged that the murder was a pre-planned one and orchestrated by the leaders of the SAD.
The JCD’s countrywide rallies, human chains and processions wearing black badges were held in Dhaka, Brahmanbaria, Narayanganj, Bhola, Chattogram, Cumilla, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Patuakhali and Lalmonirhat.
Dhaka University unit of the JCD formed a human chain in front of the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture on the campus, demanding justice for Jahidul, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· DU correspondent.
Addressing the human chain, JCD’s DU unit president Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos said that Jahidul was an active JCD activist, who was brutally killed.
