
Two men were arrested early Friday in a case filed over raping a 15-year-old girl from the Marma community of Baishari union under Naikhyangchari upazila in Bandarban during Prabarana Purnima, the second largest festival of the Buddhist community.
The arrested are Md Selim, 23, and Motiur Rahman, 25, both are residents of Joint Farm area at Baishari, said Naikhyangchari police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Mashrurur.
Villagers brought Motiur to the police station midnight past Friday while Selim was arrested in a raid by the police at about 1:30am, the OC said, adding that the victim’s brother lodged a case against the two.
According to the case statement, the incident took place at about 6:00pm on Thursday in Sadhu Ong Para area under the Naikhyangchari police station.
Victim’s brother told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Friday that his sister had gone to have a bath in Baishari canal at about 5:30pm, when most villagers were busy with preparations for the Prabarana festival.
‘My sister has a speech disability and she doesn’t speak Bangla,’ he said, adding that his sister went alone to the canal where Selim and Motiur followed her.
Noticing her delay in returning home, the family began searching for her and later found her crying in a bamboo grove near the canal steps.
Quoting the victim, her brother said that Motiur stood guard while Selim grabbed his sister and dragged her into the grove where Selim raped her.
A case has been filed under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, the OC Mahsrurur said, adding that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
