
The police foiled sacked trainee police sub-inspectors fast unto death programme by spraying water in front of Bangladesh Secretariat, the country’s administrative headquarters, in Dhaka early Wednesday.
The incident took place at about 1:00am on Wednesday as the police sprayed water through a water canon, protesters alleged.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna Division deputy commissioner Masud Alam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they warned them to leave the place as authorities imposed ban on protests near the secretariat.
‘We didn’t hurt them. We sprayed water to disperse them,’ the DC added.
They started a fast unto death programme since Monday at about 4:00pm in front of the secretariat.
The concluding parade of the 40th batch is scheduled to be held today where 480 trainee SIs from the batch would join.
Earlier, they formed human chain in front of the secretariat on January 5 and January 6.
Including the eight trainee SIs sacked on January 2, a total of 321 trainee SIs out 823 were sacked for breaching discipline during various sessions of training programmes after the fall of Awami League-led autocratic regime on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.
On October 21, 2024, at least 252 trainee sub-inspectors, who were receiving basic training at the Bangladesh Police Academy at Sardah in Rajshahi under the 40th outside cadet batch, were discharged allegedly for breaching discipline.
