Police on Sunday arrested two persons in connection with injuring a trader by hacking him on the Elephant Road in the capital on Friday night.

The arrested are Asifur Rahman Jhantu, 32, and Md Kausar Mridha, 24, said New Market police officer-in-charge Md Mohsin Uddin.


‘We are investigating the matter as a case was filed with the police station on Saturday,’ the OC told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

According to police, at about 11:00pm on Friday 8 to 10 miscreants indiscriminately hacked Multiplan Centre Dokan Malik Samity joint general secretary Ehteshamul Haque in front of the centre on the Elephant Road.

A video of the incident went viral on social media that drew attention of people from all walks of life.

ECS Computer City, Multiplan Centre senior joint general secretary Md Wahidul Islam Dipu filed the case with the New Market police station naming listed criminal Sanjidul Islam Emon and his associates.

The case was filed accusing 10 named people and 20-25 unnamed ones of the attack.

The plaintiff Wahidul, also elder brother of listed criminal Pichhi Helal, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that listed criminal Emon and his associates launched the attack.

‘I was on the spot and also sustained stab injuries to my leg,’ he said.

According to the jail authorities, listed criminal Emon was released from Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj on August 15, 2024, and he was sent to the jail on December 8, 2015.

The trader, Ehteshamul, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city.

On Sunday afternoon, local government and youth and sports adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain visited the Multiplan Centre traders and exchanged views with them.

The adviser urged traders not to be panicked, assuring them of ensuring justice and arrest of the attackers. 

‘We have found links to extortion in hacking the trader on the Elephant road. One involved in the incident was arrested and directives were given to law enforcement agencies to arrest the rest of the persons associated with the incident,’ said Asif. 

Traders of Multiplan, however, alleged that the incident took place over extortion and establishing dominance in the market.

On Saturday, traders formed a human chain demanding the authorities ensure justice for the attack on the trader.
